The Way Out Where Is In :: A Holiday At The Sea Playlist

thewayoutwhereisin.png

Here’s a fun little playlist to celebrate Serendipity.

Let me explain: My name is Brent and I love the Grateful Dead. So it makes perfect sense to lead off this mix with the Dead rehearsing with Brent in April 1979 right before his first tour with them.

And, not only is my name Brent and I love the Grateful Dead, I love the music of Miles Davis. So much so that Miles Davis is one of the reasons we named our oldest son Miles. So it makes perfect sense to include Miles Davis playing at the Fillmore West; a bill shared with none other than the Grateful Dead. You can watch video here.

OH, and if all that wasn’t enough, I was born in 1973! Not in Summer, but still, the Dead jamming with Brent for a song named after my birth year, how could I not include it here?!

So we have two tracks from the Dead and Brent rehearsing, two tracks of wild Miles opening for the Dead. Then, we wrap things up with the drums/space segment (except I reversed them here) from Dead and Co. in Phoenix, AZ, 2017. Because, guess what: WE WERE THERE!

So here’s a mix of out there stuff with inward significance. This playlist is not for everyone. But if you know, you know. Ya dig?

Setlist:

  1. “Booji Boy's Bad Trip (Drums, Space, Feedback)” by the Grateful Dead

  2. “Miles Runs The Voodoo Down” by Miles Davis

  3. “Summer of ‘73” by the Grateful Dead

  4. “It’s About That Time” by Miles Davis

  5. “Space/Drums” by Dead and Co.

Hania Rani Live from Studio S2 (2021)

a2233793054_10.jpeg

“The full live set video was premiered on the evening before the annual Piano Day worldwide celebrations (March 29th). The motivation to make the recording of the live performances which became the release ‘Live from Studio S2’ came from the invitation from the Berlinale Film Festival.”

Hania says:

“I decided to rearrange some of my favourite songs, which I have been performing live for years. Recorded live and captured in the iconic Studio S2, one of the recording studios of Polish Radio in Warsaw. The hall is fully covered with light wood, which reminds me of other Radio Studios all around the world - like Funkhaus in Berlin for example. There is a kind of intimacy when playing the little piano in this huge and also very high venue.”

Setlist:

  1. Hawaii Oslo

  2. Glass

  3. Leaving

  4. Buka

Important People and Facts:

The session was filmed by Rani’s long time collaborators - Mateusz Miszczyński, recorded by Agata Dankowska, mixed by Piotr Wieczorek and mastered by Zino Mikorey. Recorded live on the 4th of February 2021 in Warsaw.

Sound Tribe Sector 9 :: GrooveTV #201

Screen Shot 2021-04-16 at 12.57.17 PM.png

I have no idea who/what GrooveTV was/is, but I do know that I dig early 00’s STS9 set from The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA; 12/5/02.

I’ll be honest and say that this is not a band I know well, nor have I really followed them much beyond the little pocket of shows I’ve heard. So, I don’t know if the setlist is correct or not, but one of the YouTube comments lists:

Setlist:

Satori, ?, Grow, New song > Tap In, Baraka II: Moonsockets, ?, STS9 Ramone > Eb > Emiglio E: Circus, What is love?

You know it’s good when it includes a “?”. Some of you may know more details about this show, and I’m glad to hear them if you do. But otherwise, just enjoy.

Natalia Lafourcade :: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

natalialafourcade_ljdoyle_sq-5d78f3a865cc36f1d4a53e2dc18ec8c2bc4e78c6-s800-c85.jpeg

“Oct. 27, 2017 | Felix Contreras -- Natalia Lafourcade is a successful singer-songwriter whose voice and music live on the edge of pop, but maintain a distinct independence.”

Setlist:

  1. "Soledad y el Mar"

  2. "Mi Tierra Veracruzana"

  3. "Tú Sí Sabes Quererme"

“A few years ago, while Lafourcade was traveling Brazil, she felt a great nostalgia for her native Mexico and its folk music. When she finally returned home, she immediately called some friends for the kind of party that is ubiquitous in Latin America: lots of social drinking, lots of food and lots of guitars and singing. Classic folk songs were on the playlist and a good time was had by all.

Someone recorded the informal jam session and Lafourcade's management team heard the tapes. "This is your next record!" they told her.

That record, Musas: Un Homenaje al Folclore Latinoamericano en Manos de los Macorinos, Vol. 1, was a commercial and critical hit, and received a Latin Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It only made sense for Lafourcade to bring her Musas tour to the Tiny Desk. The performances are an ode to a magical time in Mexican popular music, one that is revived with every note this singer and her band perform.

One important historical note: The two older gentlemen on the video are Juan Carlos Allende and Miguel Peña, two revered musicians who played with the iconic ranchera singer Chavela Vargas.”

Nubya Garcia: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

mqdefault.jpeg

“The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.”

Setlist:

  1. "Source"

  2. "Pace"

  3. "Boundless Beings"

Players:

  • Nubya Garcia: tenor saxophone:

  • Joe Armon-Jones: keys;

  • Daniel Casmir: double bass:

  • Sam Jones: drums; Richie Seivwright:

  • vocals; Cassie Kinoshi: vocals

“September 16, 2020 | Suraya Mohamed -- Look to the left of Nubya Garcia's Tiny Desk (home) concert and you'll see a hanging plant swaying right above the keys. It never stops moving during the next 23 minutes, and it's for a bizarre reason. Garcia's (home) concert took place on a boat — a first in Tiny Desk history — because she was in between homes. Before the pandemic hit, the London-born jazz saxophonist and composer was booked for an extensive global tour that started in February 2020, and it was expected to continue through the end of the year. Because she was only going to be in London for a very short time, she gave up her flat, planning to stay with family and friends for short breaks. It seemed like a good idea until March, when COVID-19 shut down most of the world and the tour, too.

Garcia and her band are at Soup Studio, a recording facility built on a decommissioned floating lighthouse moored on the River Thames. It's also where Garcia recorded her excellent new album, SOURCE. This set features three songs from the record; the title track starts it off with a reggae, dub vibe. Garcia skillfully uses the entire range of her tenor saxophone, hitting convincing low and high notes with ease and resolve. Throughout the set, her tone is gorgeous, her musical intuition perfect. She projects rich and full melodic lines with refined solos that leave just enough space to take in the expressive sincerity of the music. There are no lyrics but her music conveys a message of staying grounded, being present in the moment and appreciating the comforts and feelings of what it means to be home.”

Bukhu Ganburged :: "Behind Doors"

Bukhu Ganburged :: Morin Khuur & Khuumii

Setlist:

  1. Long Song

  2. Demonstration

  3. Chinggis Khaan

  4. Improvisation

“Internationally renowned virtuoso of the Morin Khuur (Horse Head Fiddle) and Khuumii (Harmonic Overtone Throat Singing), Bukhu draws on the traditional folk music of Mongolian nomads and Shamanic culture to create his distinctive soundscape.

Bukhu graduated from the Mongolian Music and Dance Conservatory, Ulaanbaatar (2007) with a Masters in performing the traditional Mongolian Long Song. This song may last for up to three hours in the performance realisation and commands from the performer not only physical prowess for its duration but also technical and intellectual virtuosity. The player has to tackle simultaneously a number of difficult extended techniques to conceptually convey a sense of meditational tranquillity.

Of particular note, the Long Song is recognised by UNESCO as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”
