Wordless Flight Emerges

oj1Rn6EO.jpeg

Caleb Nei bills himself as: “Washington DC Area Event & Cocktail Pianist,” usually playing “about 180 jazz dates each year throughout Virginia and Washington DC.”

Nei’s newest project Wordless Flight. “Emergence,” Nei’s first release under the new moniker is a collection of improvisations “Recorded on a felted upright piano, a Mason & Hamlin reed organ, and a collection of analog synths.” Nei says that “Emergence” is the first of several releases in this vein, with lots more music already recorded.

“Recorded in the early-morning hours before the family wakes,” Nei’s improvisations are meditative pieces walking the border between minimalism, new age age, and contemporary classical.

Opening track “Another Morning” is representative of the rest of the album in all of the good ways. Interesting melodies over ambient background noise unfolding and swirling up and around to greet the day before folding back into itself.

“Murmur” propels these themes forward, while “1997” begins to push into Ambient territory and “Landscape From A Bus” pulses with an Ambient loop and “Moored Boats” makes you wonder if this wasn’t an electronic album the whole time.

This is music created with the sun rise to fill your while day.

From the Youtube page:

“Jazz trumpeter Mathias Eick offers a different, modern view of jazz: wide, expansive pieces inspired by dreamy melodies, to which the violinist Erlend Viken contributes his own voice. Viken is one of the most distinguished folk musicians in Norway and will expand the colorful range of expression of the band by adding an individual facet.”

Eishan Ensemble Live For Phoenix Central Park

a0538859971_10.jpg

Eishan Ensemble’s Afternoon Tea At Six has been one of my favorite albums 0f 2020. In fact, I recently featured the track “Signs” on my Apothecary of Wonders playlist.

The group’s official website says:

“Led by acclaimed Persian-Australian tar player and composer, Hamed Sadeghi, the quintet Eishan Ensemble draws on contemporary and classical music traditions of both East and West. Eishan’s repertoire consists predominantly of Sadeghi’s original compositions with diverse improvisatory idioms featured powerfully. Variously described as “Persian chamber jazz” and “Middle-Eastern jazz fusion”, Eishan defies neat labels.”

Here is a three-song live set they did earlier this year for Phoenix Central Park.

The deets:

Eishan Ensemble:

  • Hamed Sadeghi | Tar

  • Pedram Layegh | Acoustic guitar

  • Michael Avgenicos | Saxophone

  • Elsen Price | Double bass

  • Adem Yilmaz | Percussion

Songs:

  • Black and White

  • Signs

  • Street

Grateful Dead: Playing In The Jam (A Holiday At The Sea Mix)

Screen Shot 2020-06-03 at 12.52.41 PM.png

Ever wonder what “Playing In The Band” might sound like as an extended instrumental free-jazz-space-rock suite? Well, I did.

Inspired by Save Your Face and their various Grateful Dead mixes, I edited six different performances of “Playing In The Band” into an instrumental suite.

I’m not entirely happy with a couple of the transitions, but I dig how it turned out overall, seeing as how I am not a professional, I didn’t actually spend that much time on this, and I really only made this for myself to listen to either while I work or commuting. Enjoy.

Here are the deets for the six pieces making up the Suite:

  • 00:00 - 11:39 :: 09.21.72 at the The Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA (released as Dicks’s Picks 36)

  • 11:39-25:45 :: 03.24.73 at the The Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA

  • 25:245 - 34:47 :: 11.10.73 at Winterland Arena in San Francisco, CA (released as part of Winterland 1973: The Complete Recordings)

  • 34:47 - 44:09 :: 05.17.77 at Memorial Coliseum, U of Alabama, MS (released as part of May 1977)

  • 44:09: 52:31 :: 05.28.77 at at Hartford Civic Center, Hartford, CT (released as To Terrapin: Hartford '77)

  • 52:31 - 56:27 :: 05.28.77 at at Hartford Civic Center, Hartford, CT (released as To Terrapin: Hartford '77)

I chose these performances for no real reason other than that this is the time-period of the Dead that I listen to most and these shows happened to be on my laptop when I decided to try out this idea.

And if all that weren’t enough goodness, here’s an instrumental edit of the mammoth “Playing In The Band” from the Pacific Northwest '73-'74: Believe it If You Need It (Live) set (Live at Hec Edmundson Pavillion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 5/21/74).

Enjoy.

Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters November 1974 on Radio Sendesaal

herbie_hancock_bremen.jpg

One of the things I periodically do here at the music blog is revisit some of the things I picked up when I used to do a lot of tape-trading. Years ago, I picked up this little three-song Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters radio appearance and it’s been one of my favorite live recordings for a long time.

There’s something undeniable about Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters. Primordial, gutteral, visceral, groove-yo-booty stuff right here. Even Pitchfork agrees.

Today, for your interstellar auditory transport, we present: Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters November 1974 on Radio Sendesaal. I don’t know if live Herbie shows are your sort of thing, but if they are, I highly recommend visiting the Herbie Hancock section over at the blogspot (yes, that’s still a thing) Never Enough Rhodes, which is currently up to 53 concert recordings!

At only 3 songs and 39 minutes, this one deserves to be on repeat.

Today’s little nugget features:

  • Herbie Hancock - keyboards

  • Bennie Maupin - reeds

  • Paul Jackson - bass

  • Mike Clark - drums

  • Bill Summers - percussion

If this type of thing whets your whistle, you might want to head over to Aquarium Drunkard and watch video from the same tour.

The Comet Is Coming: Tiny Desk

The-Comet-Is-Coming.jpg

Since you, dear friends, trust my musical explorations, I know you remember my recent post about Shabaka and the Ancestors: Soul Jazz For The End of Days.

Between Shabaka and the Ancestors, Sons of Kemet, and The Comet is Coming, I dig the musical universe of Shabaka Hutchings in a way I have dug a musical universe in quite a while. While Shabaka and the Ancestors scratch my soul/spiritual-groove-roots-jazz itch, The Comet Is Comet channels my Quarantine angst with electronics, pulsating beats and skreeking skronks and some of the most evocative playing I’ve heard in a while.

The group’s Facebook page says:

“The Comet is Coming to destroy illusions. It will manifest new realities, perceptions, levels of awareness and abilities to coexist. It is a musical expression forged in the deep mystery. It is the overcoming of fear, the embracing of chaos, the peripheral sight that we might summon the fire.

Through the transcendent experience of music we reconnect with the energy of the Lifeforce in hope of manifesting higher realities in new constructs. Because the end is only really the beginning.”

Late last year, the group recorded an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, performing tracks from Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery.

Setlist:

  1. "Super Zodiac"

  2. "Summon The Fire"

  3. "Blood Of The Past"

  • King Shabaka: saxophone;

  • Danalogue: synthesizer;

Thelonious Monk Quartet 1966

Screen Shot 2020-03-20 at 10.52.40 PM.png

The internet can be a lovely place sometimes.

For example, did you know that with the most basic of Google-Fu skills, you can find amazing live concerts on the Interwebs just waiting for you to watch? Like this video of the amazing Thelonious Monk Quartet in 1966. It’s labeled “Thelonious Monk Quartet Live In 66 Norway & Denmark concerts” with only a set list and no other information. Oh well, what more do you need? I’m sure if you have more than the most basic Google-Fu skills, you can find out more about this lineup and shows than I cared to. I just wanted to get my Monk Swing on.

Sun Ra: Brother From Another Planet (BBC Documentary)

Screen Shot 2020-03-20 at 11.10.39 PM.png

In 2005, the BBC released a short (an hour or so) documentary on Jazz legend Sun Ra. The Guardian wrote:

"Letts's BBC4 documentary, Sun Ra: Brother From Another Planet, is an attempt to make some sense of the man whom he describes as "The Salvador Dali of jazz", who was born in Alabama in 1914 but proclaimed himself to have come from Saturn, on a mission to save the black race in particular from the bondage of planet Earth. Letts himself, however, admits that, even having voyaged extensively through Ra's back catalogue, "a lot of the music goes right over my head. He certainly appeared to be a bit bonkers," he concedes. "But to him, all this stuff was deep and meaningful and had a continuity to it. But it was hard to get a handle on. [Even] Marshall Allen, his saxophonist, admits he didn't quite get it."

Featuring Wayne Kramer, Thurston Moore, Archie Shepp, Marshall Allen and more, and interview segments with Ra himself, the documentary tries to make sense of the Sun Ra legacy. Watch for yourself.

Shabaka and the Ancestors (Cosmic Soul Jazz For The End Of Days)

unnamed.png

Bandleader Shabaka Hutchings has made a name for himself as an adventurous player in the adventurous London jazz scene. Perhaps most well known for his role in Sons of Kemet, or The Comet Is Coming, Hutchings recently released his sophomore release with Shabaka and the Ancestors, We Are Sent Here By History.

While Hutchings is the constant between the three projects, each has its own unique personality. Shabaka and the Ancestors finds Hutchings collaborating with a group of South African artists. The album’s page at Impulse Records says:

“We Are Sent Here by History’ is a meditation on the fact of our coming extinction as a species. It is a reflection from the ruins, from the burning. a questioning of the steps to be taken in preparation for our transition individually and societally if the end is to be seen as anything but a tragic defeat. For those lives lost and cultures dismantled by centuries of western expansionism, capitalist thought and white supremist structural hegemony the end days have long been heralded as present with this world experienced as an embodiment of a living purgatory.”

The album is out now on Impulse! Records.

McCoy Tyner and Freddie Hubbard (McCoy Tyner Trio at Jazztage Stuttgart 1990)

McCoy_Tyner_Freddie_Hubbard_1961.jpg

With the recent passing of jazz legend McCoy Tyner, this seems like as good a time as any to watch the 1990 1990 McCoy Tyner Trio Set from Stuttgart featuring Freddie Hubbard.

The Take The "A" Train blogspot offers the following background for the concert:

“A torrent of notes on keyboard and flugelhorn. Three decades after the photograph above was taken, pianist McCoy Tyner and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard are back together, this time in Stuttgart, Germany.

Freshly digitized from a nearly disintegrating VHS tape (while the image remains amazingly intact, reminding us about the virtues of analogue formats that at least allow for some sort of extraction), this exciting concert is the complete TV broadcast of McCoy Tyner Trio featuring Freddie Hubbard and Ralph Moore.”

Give Me Some Of That 1973 Miles Mojo (Have you watched the PBS: American Masters special on Miles Davis?)

Have you watched the PBS: American Masters special on Miles Davis?

I watched it the other day and really enjoyed it. Of course it left a lot out. But it was also pretty straightforward about what kind of person Miles was. Complicated. Contrarian. Like all of us. And, I felt like it gave a great overview/introduction for long-time fans and those just coming to Miles’ music.

Watch the trailer here:

It should be no surprise to you that I dig Miles Davis. My first born is named Miles. And I love the many phases of Miles’ musical explorations. But lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of the On The Corner stuff. And this 1973 Stockholm Set is right up my alley:

Yesssssseeerrrreeeeeee!

The deets are as follows:

Live at Konserthuset, Stockholm (SWE 1973-10-27)
